XP USB Ports faulty

Hi all,
I'm a brand new member from NZ. I've been reading through all the old threads on here about problems with USB ports but still am unsure how to fix mine. After being in Device Manager I believe I have 4 USB ports (2 at the front, two at the back) and one should be USB 2. DM lists them as

Standard Enhanced PC1 to USB Host Controller
Standard Open HCD USB Host Controller
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub

One of the ports at the front just doesn't work, I plug the cable to my DSLR in and it doesn't recognise it. I plug it into the other one and it works fine. (Haven't tried at the back)

Up until now this hasn't been a problem as my camera works, My Book works, and a cheap USB stick works in that one front port so I've been happy.

BUT, I've been trying to load a Logitech webcamera onto my system and it won't. (this has also happened with 2 MP3 players as well). I downloaded the correct (XP 32 bit) drivers and software from the logitech site and did everything it told me to do. It said it had installed the software and drivers correctly. But, when it finished it comes up saying 'no webcam detected'...... despite the web camera being connected to the USB port that does work. I have also tried putting the web camera into all the other ports, same thing... no web cam detected.

I took the camera to my neighbour who has a very old pc, but is running windows 7 and we plugged it in and right away it immediately started automatically downloading software and when it was finished the web camera worked. It also appeared that the download didn't actually go onto the machine??? As I went to remove it (cos my neighbour didn't need it) and it wasn't there in Add/Remove programmes.

I have tried updating the drivers for my USB ports from in Device Manager (from reading other threads) but it won't let me do it. It searches then says it can't find anything and to insert the disks ??????

I"m sure there must be a bug or malfunction somewhere that is stopping my USB ports from working correctly. My neighbours computer is much older than mine, yet it recognised the webcamera. It had Windows 7 32 bit put on it. According to the logitech website the camera I have C170 is meant to work on XP.

If anyone can help I'd be most grateful.
