Old NIC -hell-p

Problem installing PCI network card.

It is an old machine I want for some light work.
I don't think it has had a wired NIC before although it has had a wireless network adapter (which I don't have).

3 previously working cards all using the Realtek RTL8139 IC tried in 4 different slots of motherboard Asus A7V333 + Athlon XP2200+ running XP SP2.

Cards are recognised by the BIOS but Windows shows error message when trying to load the driver:
--------------
Cannot instal the hardware.
There was a a problem installing the hardware:
Ethernet controller
An error occurred during the installation of the device.
The data is invalid.
---------------

In Device manager any/all the NICs are shown as 'Other Devices' with yellow question marks.

Properties of one shows:
location: PCI slot 1(PCI Bus0 device 12 function 0)

This device is not configured correctly (Code 1)

PCI\VEN_10EC&DEV_8139&SUBSYS_813910EC&REV_10\3&61AAA01&60

---------------------------
I've tried running the setup program RSET8139.exe at DOS prompt but it says there are no NICs present in the system.

I've never had a problem with this type of card before, they usually install using default drivers.
(The machine currently has no internet connection-of course I'll try sneakernet to for TSG_Sysinfo))

Any ideas?

(Hope this hasn't double posted)
