Problem:
Did a windows vista service pack 1 update back on March 8th. No sound since.
I generally don't do updates, as it inevitably leads to a damaged or dead computer, but I had to upgrade to IE. 9 for hotmails conversion to outlook, and it said updates were needed, so I did. After the auto-reboot as part of the installation of those updates, no more sound, not even when computer is booting up. As it turns out, what was needed was Service pack 2 (apparently never had it). Still no sound, but now was able to update to I.E. 9.
What's been tried:
1: checked to make sure all connections were still in place. Confirmed, all are plugged in securely.
2: Swapped out speakers with new ones. Rebooted. Still no sound. Original speakers: one cord plugs into speaker jack behind computer. The other is USB cable that is power for the speakers. The swapped out new speakers, one plugged into the speaker jack, the other was regular power cord plugged into outlet. Both yield no sound when turned on and volume up.
3: checked for and Updated audio drivers.
-also all 3 show as 'device is working properly" (yet no sound).
4: Checked to be sure nothing was muted in volume control panel.
5: Ran Fix it. Indicates All is working.
6: Then ran Windows Audio Playback troubleshooter. Mixed results. details below.
7: Uninstalled/reinstalled drivers. See details below. Still no sound.
8: Headphones also no sound.
9: Had computer tech dude come over. He checked lots of stuff, is 'unable' to resolve issue. Suggests perhaps sound card is no good. (from a windows update? Can that kill a sound/audio card?).

Antivirus: Bitdefender Antivirus, Updated: Yes, On-Demand Scanner: Enabled
Microsoft FixIt: Went through the prompts, and then the requested reboot to implement 'fix'. Still no sound.
Then utiliized: http://support.microsoft.com/mats/AudioPlayback/ At step 2, no idea how to proceed. Not sure which is the default device on my computer. I've never modified audio devices since I got the computer. Which should I select before hitting the next button at bottom? See screenshot 1: windows-playback-audio-troubleshooter-a.
Other possibly helpful screen shots Included also: Device manager audio info, etc.
I'm not sure what else to try. I really miss my computer sound!!!!!!!!
Uninstall/reinstalldrivers:
Realtek High Def Audio version 6.0.1.5391: had a little arrow on it. Clicked on arrow. It changed to yellow triangle with ! in it.
Uninstalled and rebooted. It did not re-install the realtek device. Instead a duplicate of High definition audio device is in it's place. Didn't try anything more after this duplication occurred. Did go to Realtek website to try and find the realtec device. Multiple seaches yielded no matching device. Contacted them with inquiry a week ago. No replies.
Had previously deleted and on reboot, reinstalled the Unimodem half-duplex Audie device.
Screenshot 2 shows previous listing of audio devices. Screenshot 3, current list of audio devices after above duplication.
Screenhshot 4: Listing of system devices. I find no 'other' category.
Screen shot five: listing found under: Control panel>sound.
