Second hard drive

I've just had a second hard drive installed on my computer and would like to install applications on the second drive and run the programs from it as if it's just an extension of the original drive. Do I have to do anything else to get it to do that.
What is the 'slave-master' relationship b/n the drives and what difference does that make to the functioning of the computer.

Please enlighten.
