may have the wrong socket type

Hi all. Is there any way to tell by looking at what is printed on the outside of a cpu what socket type it is? I have an intel pentium D 3.4 ghz processor in hand and I believe I may have purchased the wrong motherboard (socket type) I thought that it was socket 478 but the issues I am having I am beginning to wonder.
