2nd Monitor Problem

I have an old system that has worked well, but it is old. That being said I want to wait until this winter to build a new one and maybe the new Windows will be out and I can pick-up a copy of Windows 7 on the cheap. I have a Dell Dimension XPS Generation 3, running Windows XP Pro. I have a ATI-Radeon 4600 Series PCI-Express card. I have had this thing running 2 monitors for years. The old HDTV I had quit and I replaced it with a Sharp LC70LE650U LED. It has @ VGA (I think it is called a 15 pin D-Sub) connector on the back labeled for PC. In fact it has one male and one female. I hooked up new HDTV and booted the computer. It starts with the Dell logo (as always), then goes to the Windows XP start screen(as usual), then here comes the rub. About the time my desktop and sound should be showing on the screens both TV and monitor go black and the TV gives error of: Signal Not Compatible with this input. I can get it to boot in Safe Mode. I was thinking there was a problem with the resolution, so I went to Start>Control Panel>Display>Hardware>Device Manager>Display Adapters>+sign, and I see ATI-Radeon 4600 Series , but only one entry. Should there not be 2? Here comes the clincher. When you go to Display Properties there used to be 2 monitors showing now only 1 shows. Being as how the only thing that changed was the TV, I am confused. This has worked for years with no problem I am Officially Stumped. If nothing ever showed on the TV, I would say it was not properly hooked up, but it shows 2 screens before both screens go black. When I boot in Safe Mode, I get images on both screens, so I think I can say it is not a TV problem but something else. Why would unplugging one HDTV and then plugging in another to the same cable make everything go sour? Any guesses at this point would be greatly appreciated. Correct answers get extra points. Thanks!
