So my friend asked me to get a virus off of his T43 with Windows XP. I figured I'd just do a clean install of Vista (because XP is now unsupported). The computer was booting fine into XP, but wouldn't accept the Vista install because the system reserved, main partition was too small. I read a solution somewhere that showed me how to make this partition inactive. I made the system reserved, partition 1 on the Hard Drive inactive and that is where windows XP was installed so the computer wouldn't boot anymore.
I changed the boot order to the CD/DVD RW Drive and tried 100 times to install Vista, and then XP again while the computer couldn't boot. Finally I used SuperGrub 2 and got it to boot back into Windows XP, I made the System Reserved partition 1 ACTIVE again. Now the T43 wouldn't boot on it's own.
With the T43 booted from SuperGrub 2, I attempted to install Vista again. Same error; not enough space on System Reserved Partition 1. I used the MiniTool Partition Wizard to extend System Reserved partition 1 and Vista started preparations for install.
Vista only asked me for (I think) 450MB initially so I extended the partition to 2 GB thinking that would be more than enough. Nope!!! When Vista began installing, it came back as not enough space again!!! This time it said I would need 7 GB!!!
Right there I believe I should've stopped the installation and extended the partition to 7GB but I've been fighting with this computer for 2 weeks, with 30 or 40 hours into it so I wasn't thinking clearly.
I installed Vista on partition 2 because it had a lot more room. Now, I have both XP and Vista installed on 2 partitions on the harddrive, and it won't even boot up with SuperGrub 2. All I get is: Windows Vista bootmgr is compressed. Press CTRL ALT DELETE to restart, over and over.
I am out of ideas. This is my friends computer and I don't want to ruin it completely. Help please!
