Solved: Hard Drive gets Hot and Disk does not Spin

I have a friend’s hard drive that I recovered from his broken laptop that I am having trouble recovering data from.
How my friend’s three-year-old Dell Inspiron laptop died: While the computer was in sleep mode, he plugged it in to an outlet. When he returned, he pressed the space bar to try to bring it out of sleep mode and then the screen flashed for a fraction of a second and then shutdown immediately as if it had just lost power. Afterwards, the computer would not start up; when the power button is pressed, nothing happens. I checked the computer for any signs of the issue, but could find none.
Now, his computer is gone, but I am trying to recover his data from his Western Digital Scorpio Blue 640GB hard drive (WD6400BPVT). I have an external power supply for hard drives (that I plug into the wall) as well as a SATA to USB connector, both of which I have used many times on other hard drives.

However, when I plug this hard drive into the power (did not plug in the SATA cable), it proceeds to get very warm, particularly on the bottom of the drive near the motor, although the whole drive does become quite hot very quickly. In addition, when placing my hand on the drive, I do not feel the familiar rumbling that comes from the spinning disk, leading me to believe the disk is not spinning and something is preventing the motor from moving, causing it to use a lot of power. In addition, the status light on power supply dims considerably when I plug it into the drive (something I have never noticed before, although it is possible it happens normally), indicating a possible large use of power.

I inspected the outside of the drive as well as the circuit board, but I could not find any visual issues.

If anyone has any suggestions on what might be wrong with the drive or how to fix it, it would me much appreciated.
