Display Driver

Hello
I'm greener than grass at this and I have a problem , Can anyone please help ?
The display driver has developed a snag , the machine repeatedly went to a black screen but made a fan like whirring noise . I had to force the pc to shut down. On restart I got a screen of gobbledegook and eventually managed to start in safe mode. Now in the device manager, under display adapters I can see Video Controller (VGA Compatible) with a little yellow mark by it. When I attempt to download a driver I get an error ocurred during installation of device Access Denied or Could not find compatible graphics hardware. I have got past my level of expertise , for all my efforts I cannot get the pc to perform the way it used to . The resolution and general speed is as if I'm in safe mode . So my question is , how on earth do I get a display driver on board .
As I have indicated , any reply will need to be in fairly basic language as I make two short planks look positively thin.
