Hi there! My 6 year old computer is having trouble lately(probably due to age) and after putting it off for a long time I have decided to ask for help. I have a pre-built Gateway FX6801-09h.
Gateway FX 6801-09h Specifications
- Intel Core i7 920 with 2.66 GHz D0 processor
- Gateway X58 Motherboard
- 12GB 1333Mhz DDR3 Triple Channel Memory capable to 24GB DDR3 Triple Channel Memory
- Built-in Memory card reader
- Creative X-Fi MB Supported Sound (Software)
- nVidia GeForce GTX 285 1GB
- DVD-Super multi Writer/Reader drive with LabelFlash
- Multi-in-one Digital Media with digital control screen on tower
- 1TB(1000GB) 16MB SATA2 Hard Drive
- 750 Watt power supply
First off is this wierd stuttering I get when I play *ANY* game. Doesn't matter how graphic intensive this always happens when I play a game that assumes focus of my screen(happens quite less frequently with windowed mode). Basically, I hear the ba-beep noise that happens when you plug in a usb device immediately followed by the removal sound. This happens a few times in a row and while it's happening my computer starts locking up but the sound still plays fine. I have found a few somewhat similar problems with solutions but none of it worked for me so far. Updating bios etc.
Secondly, my computer is starting to fall behind in power. I can still play most games on high settings but wanted to know if it would be worth it or even possible to upgrade my video card.
I would like to continue with a GeForce card. I was thinking about getting a 770 or a 680. The problems are that my motherboard only has pci 2.0 slots. I read that the cards should be backward compatible but what kind of hit to performance should I expect? Another concern is wattage. Would I have to replace my power supply as well?
Thanks!
