I have searched but not found a solution to my problem. Trying to install a backup HD in my father in law's XP (32 bit) machine since his died. I took one of my old (and yes, working) legacy drives from Vista/7 and deleted the data off of it. I installed it in the XP box and it is recognized as DISK 1 in disk management. However, the partition feature is greyed out. If I click on "initialize" nothing happens. I have even tried the "Clean" command in DOS but can't get it to initialize at all. I don't know if there is a way to "backwards" format the HD from a Win 7/8 machine so it will be accepted. Any suggestions would be great. I know if I buy a new HD it will work but this is an old T3508 eMachine and I am not looking to sink any money into it.
