This is my previous posting http://forums.techguy.org/networking...-problems.html
and I was at the stage where I had ordered an Intel Network adaptor and was awaiting it's delivery.
However, last night without any warning whatsoever, with local weather reports not forecasting any rain or storms, out of the blue there was a HUGE flash of lightning and a loud crack and the computer went off. There was no thunder until quite some time later. The PC was plugged into a surge protector, as is all other computer/electrical equipment in the room but it made no difference whatsoever. It was zapped. Mind you, it was the only thing that was affected. Fortunately, the monitor, printers, scanner and sound system are all OK.
I'm not quite sure what to do next. There wasn't a smell of burning from inside the PC nor was there smoke anywhere - there aren't any visible signs that anything is wrong. Everything looks fine. It's just the computer will not start.
I've got an old PSU that I could put in. The question is though - do you think that is a good safe starting point or what do you think. Please bear in mind that I live in rural France and our nearest computer repair shop is more than 50 miles away and there is, of course, the language barrier. I don't speak French at all well.
