Touch pad issues

Hey guys, I'm having some wacky touch pad issues and I was wondering if any one knows what might be wrong. I am, by no means, a technology expert, but I do expect it to be some sort of hardware issue.

About a week ago, regular use of my touch pad was starting to act up. I couldn't scroll or make use of tapping, left clicking, or right clicking. When on the desktop, tapping or left clicking would bring up the actions panel where I clicked as if I tried right clicking, but I still couldn't right click. Regardless, I would still be able to move the mouse icon around.

When I plugged in my wireless mouse, I could use the touchpad somewhat normally - I could move it and tap/left click, but still couldn't scroll or right click.

And just this morning, I find out that I can't use the mouse pad - at all. None of it will work, I can't even move the icon around on my screen. I am relying entirely on my wireless mouse, and the portability of my laptop is essentially gone entirely, which is a high inconvenience given my reliability on it to take notes in class.

Would any one know what's going on? Or should I have it checked out by a professional? If the latter, does any one have any suggestions on whom to call for support?

Thank you for any help you might be able to provide.

ETA: Also, I am using an Acer Aspire 5741 on Windows 7. If you need any more information, just let me know and I will provide it.
