Power supply change out questions?

6 1/2 year old Dell Inspiron 546 Minitower running Windows 7 Pro.

The power supply died and I want to swap the dead power supply with one of the many old power supplies I have laying around. I realize a big part of installing a new power supply is that it will fit in the case. This really isn't important to me, even if it just hangs there by the cables, because all I want to do is boot it up long enough to do a back up of a few files to its DVD burner. I have already purchased a new computer but would like to get a few files off the old one. If it doesn't work that's fine but would like to give it a try.

Any electrical shock issues I can avoid? Maybe no grounding strap when I do this? Also, if the replacement power supply isn't the exact Watts or Volts will it probably still work. Like I say, performance here isn't important, just want it to boot, get a few files burned to a DVD and then it goes in the garbage.

I have all the stats on this computer and can also get the model and serial number off the old power supply if needed and was wondering what a new (cheapest) power supply would cost me?

Thanks
