Dead laptop

My wife was using her laptop the other day to play a film for the kids. After a few mins she heard a grinding noise then it blue screened. It tried re-starting and after the ram check it gave the message to repair windows. It starts off ok then says there's no hard drive installed. I have tried the hard drive in another machine and its not in there either so that's screwed. I have another hard drive that works fine in the other machine but if I put it in my wife's laptop it won't work. I can hear it moving though there are no start up beeps and the screen is blank. I cant understand why, with the original drive connected, the system runs through the ram check but then stops on the next screen but when the new drive is connected the screen doesn't work though the new drive works fine in the other machine.

My wife's machine is a Packard bell easy note Argo -c. The other machine is a Notex hi-grade ultimate m6500.
We're unable to use the other machine as the battery is done and it has no wifi.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks :)
