Soldering Power Jack on Laptop

Sooooo, I have a friend (AKA my I-can-do-it-all Little Brother) who decided he could solder his loose power connector himself. Apparently he got the board too hot maybe, because now there is nada, nothing, zippo. Did he truly "fry" the mobo? Is there anything I can look at to see if recovery is possible?
(I have recovered data from the HD just by slaving it to another machine and no apparent damage there.)
