Frustrating Hardware

This is a problem I have recently encountered. I am not a novice when it comes to computers though I would appreciate any assistance that can be provided without computer-speak.

I have a Toshiba NB-505 netbook with an upgraded 2GB memory. It still has the original hard drive in it. But I also have a 750GB Western Digital Hard Drive that I often use to supplement my core hard drive and it also serves as one of my back ups.

That being said, here is the recent problem. If my hard drive is plugged in to the computer and I boot up my netbook, I receive the message PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable. And right below that...PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.

I've done research from another computer and found the most help on this site. One of the suggestions was to remove the hard drive and reinsert it. Since it was an external hard drive I unplugged it and was able to boot up the laptop. Then I plugged in my hard drive and it worked fine. As a test I shut down my computer and restarted it, both with the hard drive plugged in. This time, I got the same error message but after a brief pause the computer booted up normally.

Is there a way to fix this issue so I don't have to constantly unplug/replug my hard drive? I've tried going into the BIOS and DOS systems for booting with it and that same message will pop up. Obviously the issue has to do with my external hard drive being connected since it does boot up without the message when it is not plugged in. Any help is appreciated.
