Hi,
I have a Dell Inspiron 15r SE laptop. Had it for just over a year and recently it has been getting incredibly hot to the point it has shutdown a couple of times when playing games.
Some of these are games I've played before on it without problem and they are always on the lowest graphics settings. I also recently got Skyrim which my wife also has - she has a much inferior spec laptop and plays it fine for hours on low graphics settings with no overheating. When playing on the same low settings on my laptop it gets up to 90 degrees plus within 5-10 mins.
I've tried updating the BIOS to the latest version, cleaning the fan vents with compressed air, removing and reinstalling the graphics drivers. I also use the laptop on a flat surface. I read somewhere it could be because of upgrading from Windows 8 to 8.1 on this particular laptop but don't know if that is true. Am considering nuclear option of reinstalling OS incase it is being caused by a driver or software issue. I also know that this laptop has known issues with the graphics card.
I also wondered if it could maybe be the fan failing - the main fan at the side does not blow much air out and feels weak even when at the hottest temperature, but I don't know how I can check this. I'd be happy to get it replaced if I knew that was the problem.
If anyone has any suggestions on how I might remedy this, I'd really appreciate it.
