So here's the situation...My friend gave me his Dell Inspiron 580s to fix because it wouldn't boot to the W7 OS. I was able to get it to boot to the installed W7 OS a few times but all indications were that the HDD was failing (and it finally did). When I was able to get to the F8 screen, I ran the diag tests and all errors pointed to the HDD failing or has failed. My approach at this point is to install a new SATA drive and the W7 OS. The issue here before I proceed is that from what I've been reading, without the Dell install discs, this could be an issue. He doesn't have the Dell discs but does have legal W7 disc. I feel if I install the new HDD, then install the W7 disc he gave me, all I would have to do is go to the Dell site, enter the service tag number and download the required files/programs. Am I right?
