Laptop took a tumble - now no display

Hi folks, my laptop took a tumble earlier on, and now there's no display. Screen just stays black when I turn it on. The lights come on as they should, it makes some noise (though I think it's quieter than it was before. Couldn't swear to it though, was always pretty quiet anyway) and seems to be venting air as it should, but nothing on the screen.

I've tried plugging it into the TV via HDMI cable but no joy. Seeing as I've never done so before, though, I've no idea whether that worked anyway.

Any ideas?

It should still be under warranty, but I have a couple of essays saved on there that have to be in by Thursday or I'm f'd, so no time to wait on warranty repairs anyway :(
