So, what happens if it is short circuiting?

About seven months ago I got a display laptop (the laptop they had out in the shop for display) since it was the last of its kind (its a discontinued but actually pretty brilliant laptop)

Since then it has been crashing (no error message or game crashes, but simply like I've taken out both the power cable and the battery except I haven't) when it has the charger plugged in, and its playing video games (It did this with all the mass effect games (although its actually worse with ME1) and defiance an mmo unrelated to mass effect in any way company wise (they are both made from different companies and producers blah blah, but I'm not sure if they use the same game engines or w/e)

This morning I spilt water on it, and did all the things I wasn't supposed to do. I dried it off with a towel, but I left it there (plugged in, charging) and went back to bed thinking it would dry out (we can go into how much of an idiot I am later). When I tried to start it up, I got somewhere until it crashed about five minutes after it was on. It only had 30% charge in it even though it had been in all night, and when I turned it on again it crashed before I could even log in.

I google, and find out I've been doing stuff wrong. I put in the charger and took out the battery and now it turns on but the screen doesn't load at all, now here's the fun part. I have stuff I need off of the laptop, If the hard drive isn't saved I'm very much screwed. I have insurance, and the laptop will probably be repaired or replaced, but the guys don't guarantee the hard-drive being saved.

So if it is short circuiting, does this mean I can do anything to recover my hard drive? I need the photos and one folder to do with my book. The laptop has insurance but my hard drive is not backed up because yes I am an idiot and I have very much learned my lesson.
