Random restarts and half shutdowns?

Hi, new here, and feeling a bit desperate.

My computer is pretty solid - my no name Frankenstein. Here's the details:
Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.2

Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 955 Processor, AMD64 Family 16 Model 4 Stepping 3
Processor Count: 4
RAM: 8191 Mb
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti, 1024 Mb
Hard Drives: C: Total - 1907626 MB, Free - 1433511 MB;
Motherboard: ASUSTeK Computer INC., M4A79XTD EVO
Antivirus: Webroot SecureAnywhere, Updated and Enabled

Let me give a little bit of background, in case it is relevant. A while ago (a year? Less?) my computer started intermittently not waking up when it went to sleep. I had it set to shut off the display after five minutes, and a wiggle of the mouse wouldn't wake it up. A press of the power button stopped working, and one red light was still on. I had to hit the reset button, often twice, to get it back. Then my monitor wouldn't see the display. I determined that the DVI port on my monitor went out, so I switched to VGA with an adapter on my PC end. Then I sent my Graphics card in for a warranty replacement, because it eventually stopped showing up entirely.

NOW. Similar issues. It will go to sleep and not wake up. I 'fixed' this by setting up a screensaver and not allowing it to sleep ever. But now, sometimes it will just do that sort of hibernate state thing, often while we are in the middle of doing things. The screen flashed "No Input", the second red light goes off, and the little lights on my USB powered wireless mouse and keyboard port go out. The computer is on, but not, I guess?

It has to be reset. I have tried checking the error logs, and all it is seems to be showing me are the reboots I am forcing it to do. No power issues, no overheating that I can see. I blew it out, but it wasn't that dusty to begin with. Lately, it *seems* that it happens when there is more graphical activity, if that makes sense. Like watching a video, playing a game ... but not necessarily a graphic intensive game. Could it have something to do with switching screen resolution? Silly small games that run on 600 x 800 have been shutting down, and I know they aren't taxing the system.

I ran the 'dummies' pcpistop diagnostic test (after checking antivirus info) and the whole thing restarted when I had that in a different window and opened up google. And it just started a few minutes ago while I was playing Plants vs. Zombies.

I have checked drivers and updated them, and run a few utilities to check my hardware, including the command prompt to check SMART status - and nothing. I hope it isn's my hard drive, as it's fairly new and a lovely 2 TB. Is there anything else I can check definitively? Any ideas? I am at such a loss at the moment. ANy help would be GRATEFULLY appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
amster77
