A few days ago my laptop battery icon started suggesting that I consider buying a new battery. It was charging ok but not holding the charge for very long. Last night as I had the battery in and the power cord charging it, suddenly the screen went black. When I plugged it back in to try and restart Windows, it gave me the message "This computer cannot identify this battery and will not charge it".

When I plug it in with battery inserted I get one white flash from the power indicator followed by three red flashes. It seems clear that the battery has given up the ghost. I can still use the laptop if I remove the battery and just keep it plugged in to a power source. Also, when I go into device manager it shows all three battery entries as working properly, the Microsoft AC Adapter, the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, and the Microsoft Composite Battery - despite the fact that I have removed the battery described below:

The battery is a Dell Type 127c Rating 11.25V Capacity 60Wh rechargeable Li-ion Battery.

I've seen a few for sale on eBay but am leery of buying there....

My question is - does it seem clear this battery has died? Where is the safest place I could purchase another? I am in the US, West Coast.

I hope someone can help me and that this isn't a stupid question ......thanks in advance, Maltasama

eta: This computer was purchased new in 2009.
