Mouse issues

Hope I've posted this in the right area. I'm having mouse click speed problems. A single left click often produces unexpected actions, such as backing the screen up two or three frames instead of one, collapsing all screens instead of just one, etc. Trying to select my Mozilla Bookmarks has become really problematic.....they appear, and then immediately disappear.

This problem appeared suddenly without having made any adjustments to the computer. I've attempted to solve it by selecting Control Panel> Mouse> Double-Click Speed adjust to slow, but it's made no difference. This problem appeared several weeks ago, long before Windows XP became obsolete, so I don't think it's involved in the issue. I use Firefox and IE8.

If it makes a difference, the mouse is a Logitech LX-3 optical mouse. All the other mouse functions appear to be working properly. This issue has made using the computer frustrating and a lot less fun because left-clicking produces so many unexpected and unwanted things to happen. Can anybody advise me?
