Hi there,
I'm not totally sure if this is an appropriate question to be asking on Tech Guy but I've always found it a great place for advice so I'm going ahead. Apologies in advance if I shouldn't be asking for retail advice here.
I need to buy a new ultraportable computer for doing my thesis. I want something that doesn't weigh more than a kilo and has a reasonable keyboard and good a battery life as possible. A relatively good processor would be nice too, although all it will have to cope with is word processing, internet browsing and looking at photos.
A year or so ago I would just have gone out and got something, but now netbooks are passé and the market is confused with touchscreens, tablets and ultrabooks.
However, I have a maximum budget of £500. I can't afford an ultrabook and a touchscreen seems worse than pointless - I will mostly be word processing and I'm led to believe they eat up battery.
So I'm probably thinking some kind of 11.6" screen laptop. I'd be glad to hear of anything current, although I think the older models will still meet my requirements. So far I've wondered about the Lenovo Ideapad or Thinkpad edge, the Aspire V5-131 and the Asus Vivobook.
I'm also wondering how easy it would be to upgrade an older model which meets my portability specs with extra ram etc.
Any advice much appreciated!
