Solved: No display at all when THREE 16x PCI-E SLOTS have GPU's installed.

Motherboard - ASROCK Z87 KILLER

In this setup I have 7x GPU's connected to the motherboard. The mobo has four PCI-E 1x slots which are connected to gpu's with powered risers (1x-16x) and three 16x pci-e slots.

System will give a display/load/boot fine with 5 cards - but 4 of them are in the pci-e 1x slots and only ONE (the only one that seems to give a display when connected with DVI cable) is connected to a pci-e 16x slot without a riser.

So everything works fine UNTIL I try to connect two more gpu's to the remaining 16x slots (using 16x - 16x risers.)

When I plug in these two cards, I get no display whatsoever with the exact same setup (dvi cable is connected to the same card in the pci-16x slot that worked fine without the other two pci-e16x slots populated).

I've tried changing the pci-e link speed on all three cards, from auto-auto-auto to 1-1-1 and a few other combinations, no dice.

Basically, it works fine until I populate the other two 16x slots with cards. The other five 1x slots are jumpered and have been working fine.

In order to get back into the bios I have to disconnect the two 16x slots and then I'm back where I started. It will also not work with 2/3 of the 16x slots populated either.

Please advise me on how I should proceed as I have been googling around with no luck as to what to do. I have also tried connecting the DVI cable to every other card (hoping that I would get a display on one of the cards connected to a different 16x slot, but no dice.)

EDIT : Problem is solved by connecting the dvi cable to the card in the FIRST PCI-E 16x slot (I had it unknowngly in the 3rd pci-e 16x slot) and setting all lanes to PCI-E gen 1.

Hope this might help anyone else trying to get 7 cards running on the z87 killer board.
