Help! Windows XP won't load!

Dear Tech Support Guys/Gals,

Hello. Would someone please help me? Late last night, Windows started automatically downloading a series of new updates. I turned off the electricity, figuring that the laptop would just continue running on battery while the downloading continued, and then the computer would shut down naturally.

Unfortunately, this morning I found a black and white screen. I tried the various options: safe mode, last normally working settings, starting windows normally, etc. I didn't really know what to do. Everything I tried just keeps bringing me back to that original screen. Windows will try to load; I see the familiar logos, but it never quite makes it, and brings me back to the black and white screen.

My guess is that maybe the registry got corrupted when the power cut off before the Windows updates were finished downloading. OR....maybe one of those new updates corrupted something.

I would rather not have to reinstall Windows XP if not absolutely necessary. There is an important folder of docs that I have not backed up recently.

I am an amateur. Eddie helped me last month to remove malware, but this is so much worse, because now I cannot even get into Windows XP! Would someone please provide me with very clear, step-by-step instructions on what to do? I would be SO grateful!

This is my only laptop. Toshiba Satellite. I do not have any other source of internet access. I am typing this in an internet cafe in Ukraine. (I am an American). I will check back here regularly. The sooner someone can reply, the better. I am an author, and totally dependent on this computer.

Thank you VERY much for your help!!!!

Larry (aka Going Crazy)
