A friend of mine bought a new computer from Best Buy. She had the Geek Squad set it up for her. After he left she wanted to switch back to her old keyboard because the letters were white and easier to read. She got it and found that he had cut the cord off a couple inches from the board. I guess he did that instead of pulling it through the hole she had it through. She gave me all her old equipment and just to see if it could be done, I removed all the screws and opened the keyboard up. There was a small circuit board held in by 2 screws and the cord was connected to it. I know they aren't very expensive, but I like to tinker with things. Can those be bought and replaced? It's a Compaq and there are several numbers on the board.
