I've been having a problem recently with my GPU overheating.
I got it a few months back, and everything was running fine, for the most part.
Playing Battlefield 3, for instance, would cause my GPU to crash, displaying the infamous vertical bars across my screen, with a hue resembling whatever I saw last in the game.
"Say I was in a desert, the lines would be light brown."
And I thought nothing of it, really, because the 5770 I switched from was giving the same problem.
I thought the card just had a "hiccup" and I turned down the settings in-game, and everything worked fine.
Now, the problem has returned. In mostly every game I play, from Battlefield, Kingdoms of Amalur, to Skyrim. So I looked into it a little bit, and I was surprised to find out that my videocard is crashing when it reaches 80 degrees Celsius, or maybe a bit higher.
Also, when I have my fan speed around 60, and leave my computer doing nothing at all, only showing my desktop background, the temperature slowly climbs to 80 Celsius. Only when my fan speed is at 85 or higher does it actually stick around 65 degrees idle. Which is ridiculous. 6000 rpm is quite loud.
Now I wish I had payed attention to this before, because now I don't know if my videocard was reaching 80 before, when it was working just fine, and the videocard could handle it. Or if it's just recently been reaching these high temperatures, and then shutting itself off because those temperatures could be dangerous.
I know that it isn't my actual cases heat, because the fans still work perfectly, I have just cleaned the case, and when my videocard is at about 80 degrees Celsius, my CPU is only at around 60-65.
So now I'm thinking I have to break into this videocard, and clean it up, dust it out, and perhaps replace the thermal compound.
But the problem with that is, I have no idea how to open this thing, and couldn't find any tutorials on how to do so.
If you have any ideas, please share them. I really hope this isn't that hard to follow, I'm really frustrated with this card. Thank you.
