My desktop system has a 2TB WD main hard drive with Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on it and 2x 3TB Samsung drives for storage.
I added a 4TB Seagate NAS drive ST4000VN000 for more storage and now the PC won't boot properly in the morning.
- On first boot in the morning Windows will load very slowly, and the 4TB drive won't show up in explorer.
- If I reboot and look in BIOS the 4TB drive is not listed as present.
- If I switch the machine off, and on again the 4TB drive will appear in BIOS, and will function normally all day, including after extended periods of the whole machine being switched off.
- I have swapped SATA cables and power leads endlessly and no improvement, and my 3 original drives continue to function normally
- The SATA ports are set to AHCI
- My mobo is a Gigabyte 990XA-UD3 Rev 3.0 with the latest BIOS loaded
- My PSU is a Hiper 580W Type-R Modular, all voltages appear to be good
I work with computers professionally, but this one has me a bit stumped. Could my new drive be faulty? Maybe its because it is an NAS drive, not desktop? Could my motherboard have a problem with 4TB drives?
SOLVED: This morning I went immediately in to BIOS instead of trying to load Windows again and noticed the +12v rail was at 10.5v, and over the next few minutes it rose to 11.8v. This explains everything for me, I guess the PSU is failing and the new drive must be extra sensitive to low voltages. I will replace the PSU and report back if it doesn't fix things.
