No display after new graphics card

I just had installed a new MSI RadeonHD6450 graphics card as a solution to the problem in this thread

I was told I needed to get a DVI to VGA adapter. I didn't know there were different kinds but just got the right one (DVI-D)

Had to order because none at local stores.
While I was waiting, I hooked the monitor to the old VGA but no display.
Now that the adapter is here, I hooked it up and it still doesn't display.
Power is on.

The monitor says "no signal"

Would anyone have some suggestions so I could try to troubleshoot this?
