I'm trying to find out what's wrong with a modern laptop which has been damaged with water leakage. It's not starting up (the light comes on for a few seconds then goes off again - nothing on the screen) and I'm suspecting the motherboard, however, in an attempt to retrieve data from the disk drive (SATA) I mounted it into an external caddy (USB) and plugged it into my computer but nothing was recognised.
I tried this both on Win7 and on Linux Puppy but neither would detect that the drive was there.
Although possible, I'm reluctant to believe that the disk drive AND the motherboard are dead so I'm thinking along the lines of the interface.
The dead machine is a modern Win8 Acer Aspire V3 and I'm suspecting that it would have been using UEFI and AHCI. If it's the case that the disk was set up using AHCI, would that stop it being recognised in my disk drive holder? Are there any other tests I should be thinking of?
