HP scanjet problem???

I selected this forum to discuss the problem because this hardware is where it started.

I have A HP Scanjet 3970. It has been working properly for scans "on the glass", but recently i tried scaning a slide
transparency and 35mm negatives. When I tried this I received an error message:

" An error occurred communicatin with the scanning device"

There is a connection going fro the base to lid. I assume there is a backlight on the lid
that turns on for scaning transparencies that was not working properly.

So i went to the HP support site:

www.hp.com/support

I did not find a solution for my specific problem, but there was a 866 # nto call for help.

At this number I was connected to a woman who Identified herself as a HP/Microsoft support technecian and asked me to
describe my problem and I did.

She suggested that the problem was due to an O/S software corruption. I found this a bit puzzeling, But I let her run a scan of my system which appeared to discover hundreds of errors. Using a program called Support-LogMeInRescue.exe

I run the latest Norton AV which gave me a clean and secure in a recent scan.

She said Norton is no good at detecting errors of this type, only an expert using Microsoft tools can fix the problem and if I
did nothing, things would get worse. Even my printer would eventually be affected and possibly fail.

This made no sense to me. It did no seem to address the problem of the scanner only failing on a scan of slides, which I believe requires light from the lid.

She quoted a price to fix everything: $69 or $129 for three year support.

I finally thanked her and hung up. Not trusting them to fix my problem(s).

So... It could be a physical problem in the connection to the lid, or possibly a driver. But if it were a driver problem, I would
think it would not scan at all.

What do you think?
