Well, My problem is regarding the Secondary IDE channel (port/interface) on the motherboard of my desktop PC. My motherboard is Intel D845GVAD2. (MicoATX Factor)
Well, Earlier each desktop motherboard has got 2 IDE interfaces - Primary & Secondary.
On each IDE interface upto 2 IDE drives can be connected using dual IDE cable - called Master and Slave drive.
BY convention, the primary IDE port is for HDD and secondary IDE port is for ODD but we can reverse it. Isnt it?
So, the problem I am encountering is that when I connect 2 (two) ATA/IDE HDD to the secondary IDE port, the Operating System won't load. I only get a blank screen after POST. Only when 1 (single) HDD is connected to this interface, then only the OS loads and computer works. But this must not happen. This is not normal.
Similarly, when I connect 2 ODD (DVD burner) to the secondary port, the computer boots but only when I manually set each ODD data transfer mode to MWDMA2 (multi word DMA 2) within IDE configuration in BIOS. Otherwise, the BIOS uses the faster UDMA mode but in this mode the computer just wont boot (the windows OS freezes just after few seconds after it starts to load) even though these 2 ODD support UDMA transfer mode. Earlier there was no such problem.
Also, when I installed these 2 HDD drives on the primary IDE interface, the computer started without problem and BIOS used UDMA mode 5 for both the drives. Same for ODD. This proves that that there is no problem in HDD or ODD or IDE cables or BIOS. Problem is in the motherboard which has got the IDE interface.
(I checked the secondary IDE channel properties in device manager in Windows XP and it tells that this device is working properly. There are no resource conflicts too.)
So, what exactly has gone wrong with the motherboard? I want this answer from you experts. I tried everything possible but it didnt work. I am not a hardware/motherboard engineer/expert.
Is there any setting which might got changed which is causing this problem then is there a way to reset the motherboard to default factory setting? (Thought I have never changed any motherboard setting). Also, the H/W settings in the device manager are automatic and disabled.
Or if a component on the motherboard has got damaged then which is that component?
Yes, one thing I must tell, before this, I used the secondary IDE channel to connect SATA HDD to the motherboard using an IDE to SATA converter device as my motherboard has no SATA port. The SATA HDD worked fine. But as long it was connected, the red LED on CPU was continuously ON. Did this cause damage to the motherboard/IDE interface?
If it is due to damaged component on motherboard then could it get replaced/repaired?
The place where I live has no Intel service centre. But do Intel service centres resolve/fix such problems?
What can I do?
Other than this the motherboard has got no other problems.
Please help.
